Are you having problems letting go of things? If you often find yourself unable to remove stuff in your home because you’ve put so much sentimental value into them, then you may also find that you’re accumulating a lot of clutter. But do you know that it’s quite liberating to have the power to let go of your possessions?
Many people struggle with the task of letting go. There’s nothing that keeps them from doing it, only their attachment to the objects. If you can relate to this, then continue reading along. In this article, you can learn how to let go of your possessions with ease and declutter your life.
When you think about it, it’s possible to let go of everything you own. Of course, for practical reasons, you’re going to need your clothes, your home, and the essential things you use every day in the kitchen for cooking and eating. Apart from that, you can basically let go of most things because you don’t absolutely need them to survive.
So, with this in mind, what’s stopping you from letting go of things?
The truth is that we value things, not just for their practical uses alone. We give them sentimental value, that’s why we think we cannot dispose of them. If you can understand why you keep things, it will be much easier for you to let them go.
There are things in our lives that make us feel more secure. We keep these things for those “just in case” scenarios that never really happen. We just feel safer having them in our possession.
Do you notice that you go shopping or buy things you don’t really need when you feel uncertain or anxious? That’s because you’ve placed security in your possessions. But even if you fill your house with so many things, you’ll always feel insecure. You’ll still feel uncertain.
It’s because security is not real. There’s nothing we can do that will absolutely make us feel truly safe. Anything can happen at any day at any time. You can buy all the things that will give you the illusion of security, but that’s all they can provide you - an illusion.
You don’t have to let go of your things if you don’t want to. However, you have to make an honest assessment of your possessions. Are they making your life more cluttered? Is the clutter making you feel miserable? If this the answer to either of these questions is yes, then it’s time to start letting go of things so you can have a freer, more mindful life.
So many of our possessions are things that we don’t use daily. Apart from our clothes, computer, phone, car, home, bed, utensils, and kitchenware, what else do we need, right? Everything else that’s not among our essential possessions is just taking up space in our homes. Try to go through this list below and assess your belongings.
If you’re a book lover, your books are your treasures. If they bring you happiness, you don’t need to let them go. However, if you’re just keeping them and you don’t read any of them, then it’s time to think about letting them go. This way, other people who need them can actually use those books. Besides, you’ll have so much space after you’ve given them away.
Many of us are guilty of keeping clothes that we may never wear again. Sometimes, we keep clothes because we think there will come a time that it will be perfect to use them. But the chances are that time won’t happen. Be realistic, even if it will hurt. For example, will you be able to lose that excess weight so you can go back to wearing those clothes? Think about it, and then learn to let go. When you do lose weight, you can always buy new clothes.
Shoes are like clothes because they’re difficult to let go of since we think we need them all. But in the same way with books, if you like collecting shoes and you find happiness looking at them, then there’s no reason to get rid of them. But if your shoes are cluttering your home and they’re a mess, it’s best if you only keep the ones you actually use.
Letting go of your possessions isn’t difficult. You only need to be honest with yourself about how you feel about your things. Do they make you happy? Or are they making your life miserable? Do you take care of your belongings, or you just let them gather dust?
It all depends on your relationship with your possessions. There’s a difference between a collector and a hoarder. If you find that you don’t have any space in your home to be comfortable enough, then it’s time to make a decision and let go of your things. Sentimental items may be harder to let go of, but try to remember that the feelings and the thoughts behind them are what matter, not the things themselves.
The key here when it comes to letting go of things is absolute honesty. Why do you keep your possessions? Why should they stay in your home? Would they be more useful to another person? Think about these questions when you’re decluttering your home or office so that you can be guided in what to keep and what to let go.
Remember not to place your security and comfort on things. Things are just things, and they can never make you feel one hundred percent secure. Only you can do that for yourself. You will enjoy a lot of benefits if you can learn to live with the essentials and the things that make you happy. As for the rest, allow them to be valuable to other people who need them.
