Strengthen Your Will With Daily Meditation

articles self-care May 22, 2020

Do you know that your willpower can determine your success? We all have different goals in life, like getting a diploma, achieving a stunning physique, or having enough money in the bank. We can all achieve these goals if we can strengthen our will and practice self-discipline.

With all the dreams and ambitions that we have, we’re also going to need a lot of inner strength to pursue them. Without the willpower, self-discipline, determination, and perseverance, our dreams will remain to be as that - dreams and wishful thinking.

If you think you’re a person who lacks self-discipline and willpower, don’t worry. All of us sometimes feel that we don’t have control over ourselves, and we can’t command our minds to tell our bodies to do this task or complete that project. Stop telling yourself, “I have no self-control.”

You ought to know that there’s a way that you can strengthen your willpower, and that is through consistent meditation practices. It’s easy to dismiss meditation as some new-age practice, but it is an effective way to help you develop self-discipline, among many things.

Meditation for Building a Stronger Will

If you want to test the power of meditation and what it can do for the improvement of your life, devote at least a month to practicing it daily. Each meditation session will teach you so many things, and one of those is the power of self-discipline. What’s guaranteed here is that you will reap so many benefits from practicing meditation. While you may start out with the intent to develop patience or strength of will, you’ll soon find that you’ve gotten so much more out of it.

To start, you don’t need to spend hours meditating. This challenge doesn’t have to radically disrupt the routines of your everyday life. You only have to dedicate two or even five minutes a day, and you can choose when you’re going to meditate. Commit to devoting a few minutes each day for meditation. Whenever you feel like you want to increase the duration of your session, do so.

Knowing if You Need Meditation to Strengthen Your Will

If you haven’t ever meditated before, then this is going to be a new habit for you. Consider it a new project for your life and self-development. Whenever we commit to a new project, we often only half-commit ourselves. Take some time to reflect on how many promises to yourself that you’ve broken. Assess what it is that’s holding you back and why you can’t give yourself entirely.

Here are some of the usual scenarios we all know too well wherein we’re half in and half out the door. It’s important to be honest with yourself if you’re doing these things so that you can face the problem and deal with it. Let’s take a look:

  • Relationships where you’re ready to break things off when you feel that it’s no longer fun, it’s getting tough, or you’re in an uncomfortable situation.
  • Going on a diet or working out for a few days or weeks but failing to continue long term.
  • Taking new classes but not being attentive during lectures because you’re too busy thinking about other things.
  • You spend time with loved ones but only being there physically because your mind is elsewhere. You may only be half-listening to your partner or ignoring your child.
  • You say yes to attending an event but canceling at the last minute or showing up just for the sake of showing up.
  • Starting a project, but you procrastinate on it and do things haphazardly when the deadline’s nearing. You don’t do it to the best of your abilities.

So, these are just a few of the typical scenarios that we’ve all come across in our lives. Do they resonate with you? Remember, you must be honest with yourself because only then will you be able to say that you need to do something about your issues with fully committing yourself

How to Meditate to Strengthen Your WilI

To strengthen your power of will, you have to really focus on your meditation sessions and dedicate the time it will take to have a successful experience.

To start, commit yourself to do two-minute meditation practices daily for one month. You can do this by saying it out loud while you’re facing yourself in the mirror. Or you can also keep a meditation journal so you can monitor your progress each day.

Second, set a schedule for yourself. When can you fit in your meditation session? You can do it anytime that suits you best. You can use your phone by setting a reminder so you won’t forget to meditate every day.

Third, it’s time to practice! For the next two minutes, sit comfortably focus on your breathing. Breathe in and breathe out and focus on just that movement. If you ever want to go longer for your session, do so, but don’t force yourself just for the sake of it.

The next step is to monitor your progress. You can check your meditation journal on how your sessions went for the week. Take some time to reflect by the end of each week and write in your meditation journal. What changes have you noticed so far? Where there challenges? How do you plan on keeping the routine for the following weeks until the month is up? Write whatever comes to mind about the meditation practice.

Success!

After a month, you’ve done it! You’ve actually committed yourself to something. You have proven that you indeed have the self-control and the self-discipline to do anything that comes your way. You can now tell yourself that you can do whatever you set your mind to.

Let go of the self-doubt that’s plaguing you or the resistance that’s always holding you back. Whenever things get intimidating for you, remember to break things into bite-size pieces and divide and conquer. When you’ve made tasks into manageable chunks like those two-minute meditation sessions, then you’re more likely to do them.
